Lot 23 Providence Tool Co. Peabody .43 Spanish #NVSN
Antique American made breechloading falling block rifle chambered for .43 Spanish, and manufactured by Providence Tool Co., R.I. Peabody rifles were made for the countries of Spain, Mexico and France, from 1866 until 1871, and later sold to state militias. Rifle features a blued finish with a case hardened receiver, a 33" round barrel, blade front sight with a rectangular block, adjustable folding ladder rear sight graduated to 400 yards, back action style lock, exposed side hammer with checkered spur, smooth curved trigger, iron mountings, no cleaning rod, and two barrel bands. The walnut furniture consists of a smooth straight gripped shoulder stock, smooth almost full-length forend, sling swivel on the rear barrel band, sling swivel on the bottom of the shoulder stock, and a smooth metal buttplate. The markings include an encircled 'W.B.' cartouche on the left side of the wrist area, an 'R' at the rear of the tang, 'H' at the front of the receiver belly, 'U' markings on both of the barrel bands, and assorted proof marks on the rest of the components. The metal surfaces have been cleaned of their original finish retaining approximately 5%, with most remaining on the rear sight. The metal displays light spots of rust, and slight deformation in the screw slots. The walnut furniture is excellent with some small losses of wood, and handling blemishes consistent with military use and storage. The action is crisp, and bore is bright with strong rifling. The markings are sharp.
